PURA D’OR Argan Oil Shampoo is a very popular product for hair loss, coming in at 4.1 overall rating out of nearly 9,000 user reviews (at the time of this post) on Amazon.
This shampoo markets itself as “The Gold Standard in Hair Loss Due to Breakage“…which is a pretty dramatic claim. Let’s find out if it’s true.
What’s in it?
PURA D’OR ingredients include 17 natural, all-organic compounds known to help with hair loss.
The shampoo base contains no industrial chemicals known to cause allergic reactions.
Notably, Pura d’Or contains no sulfates and no parabens (the two big bad wolves of beauty products). This catches my attention and makes me want to learn more.
As you can see above, this shampoo includes some of the natural ingredients we’ve previously identified as helpful for hair loss prevention.
Two of these, Saw Palmetto and Nettle Root Extract, are very well established DHT inhibitors. DHT is a derivative of the hormone testosterone, which is thought to shrink hair follicles in both men and women.
Any shampoo that includes DHT blockers is well on its way to being effective against hair loss.
Does it work? – My experience using this shampoo
Thousands of happy online reviewers on Amazon and elsewhere seem to think so.
I used this shampoo exclusively for two months.
I didn’t expect significant regrowth, since the intention of this shampoo is to prevent loss from breakage. However, I did feel that my hair was stronger, but that could also have been attributed to my other treatments, including biotin supplementation.
Also, my usage period didn’t quite meet the minimum recommended period of time to see the full effects.
My main complaint about this shampoo is that it has a thick and slightly oily consistency, and my hair always got greasy in just one day (vs. the normal 2-3). This lead to more shampoo cycles than I wanted. However, my experience is inconsistent with what most happy reviewers reported, which is a lack of greasy residue from PURA D’OR
What I like the most from my experience using Pura D’Or was the absence of any harmful chemical ingredients like sulfites and parabens. These ingredients can damage our scalp and block our efforts to regrow hair.
I also liked the pump bottle design quite a bit, and personally think all shampoo should be delivered this way. I also liked the smell, which is a big plus – it was herbal and complex and a bit citrusy, too. Anything citrusy is good in my book!
Economy: in spite of my frequent shampoos (and my hair is long, well past my shoulders) the bottle lasted for over two months. Depending on your normal price point for shampoo, this could be somewhat more expensive than your usual.
However, most women dealing with hair loss would probably agree that protecting the hair that we have left is priceless, which is to say, we’re willing to spend a lot on something that works.
