What is Propidren?
Propidren is one of the newest up and coming vitamin supplements for hair loss.
The maker, Hairgenics, also sells a popular and established hair loss shampoo, Pronexa. They have recently branched out into supplements.
Here’s a Propidren introduction pulled directly from their website:
Propidren supports follicular growth and thickens hair naturally. Just take two tablets a day to help block the negative effects of DHT and deliver vital nutrients to nourish the scalp, hair and hair follicles. Safe, effective and drug free, Propidren provides a natural nutrient boost to fine and thinning hair. Our revolutionary formula works from the inside out to energize the scalp and nourish the hair shaft to help produce stronger, thicker hair.
What’s in Propidren?
Let’s look at the label.
So, we see several ingredients: iron, biotin, zinc, and then several herbs, most prominently including Saw Palmetto. Propidren also includes Green Tea, probably as response to all the great research on caffeine-containing hair loss treatments.
Iron combats anemia, and anemia is a leading cause of hair loss. Many people have sub-clinical iron deficiency, meaning that medical tests would not show a positive result for anemia. These people can still experience hair loss as a result of this iron deficiency.
An iron supplement is the quickest, easiest way to address anemia and sub-clinical iron deficiency.
Biotin is a B vitamin with an indispensable role in hair growth and hair strength. Most of us don’t get enough in our diets through food. Read more about biotin on my blog here.
Zinc deficiency is a common problem for many people, who go through life unaware that this is at the bottom of many of their symptoms.
One symptom of zinc deficiency is thinning hair. Some people do get enough zinc through the nutrition in their diets, but are unable to absorb it due to various health conditions. Conditions affecting zinc absorption include: alcoholism, rheumatoid arthritis, IBS, any kidney disease, diabetes, and vegetarians.
Zinc deficiency should be on everyone’s radar if hair loss is a concern. It’s one of the easiest and first things to troubleshoot.
What is Saw Palmetto?
Saw Palmetto is plant with small berries used by Native Americans for centuries. Native Americans used saw palmetto for various medicinal purposes including hair health.
In the west, Saw Palmetto has been studied mostly for men’s prostate and bladder health, although one study showed improvement in hair loss when used as a topical treatment.
Luckily, the mechanism that makes Saw Palmetto so helpful for prostate issues in men is the same mechanism that makes it help people with curing hair loss: Saw Palmetto blocks DHT, a byproduct of hormone testosterone.
What are DHT inhibitors and blockers?
Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, causes hair loss. DHT blockers and stop the movement or lower the level of DHT in the blood. Products containing DHT inhibitors, like Saw Palmetto, Fo Ti, and Pygeum, and Green tea (all ingredients in Propidren) will stop hair loss and induce hair regrowth.
How Does Saw Palmetto Stop Hair Loss in Women?
Even though testosterone is thought of as a “male” hormone only, women also have testosterone and therefore DHT.
Hair loss for women resulting from hormonal imbalances like excess DHT tends to be more all-over the whole scalp, meaning it looks more like thinning than balding, whereas for men it tends to follow “pattern baldness”.
How will DHT inhibitors help hair regrow?
If a woman’s DHT level is lowered, her hair loss will stop. Most DHT blockers and inhibitors have added advantage of helping the blood circulate properly. This supplement contains FOUR known herbal ingredients that work together to block DHT.
What about all the other herbal ingredients?
Beta-Sitosterol, Horsetail Extract, and Nettle Extract each has a demonstrated and researched relationship with hair regrowth.
In addition to blocking DHT, Green Tea, specifically, contains caffeine which has been shown in recent breakthrough science to help with hair loss.
Why take this one supplement instead of each of these ingredients individually?
First of all, convenience is king. It would be extremely expensive and annoying to buy separate supplements for EACH of these substances.
If you can get most of what you need in one pill, it’s the best approach.
Propidren provides minerals that nourish and support hair regrowth and combat hair loss, ones that people are too often deficient in.
Propidren also provides a cocktail of herbal supplements that influence and promote hair regrowth and stop hair loss.
How long will it take to grow new hair with Propidren?
Growing new hair after reversing hair loss usually takes at least 3 months. This is because the normal hair growth cycle takes months to develop.
Your hair may be regrowing after a few weeks, but you’ll only notice significant difference only after 3 months. Patience is the key in growing new hair. To give this product a full change for results, use it for at least 90 days.
What do people say about Propidren?
The reviews on Amazon.com are quite positive, 4.6/5 stars out of 53 reviews at the time of this article. Most people say they say less hair loss, and many say they say thicker, fuller hair.
One review from a user with an extensive history of reviewing all kinds of products with various feedback and star levels (ie, not a paid reviewer) described seeing less of her hair fall out after two weeks of using Propidren.
We all know the feeling of seeing hair clumps on the bottom of the shower…anything that stops that horror has to be worth a shot.
How do you take Propidren?
Propidren is a simple supplement the size of a multivitamin that you swallow by mouth twice per day. Easy peasy.
Any side effects?
The makers of Propidren recommend that this product not be taken by pregnant or nursing women, or children under 18 per the label (see above).
Other than that, Propidren is safe for both men and women at the recommended dose of two pills per day.
Any red flags?
I don’t see much in the way of negative reviews. While the ingredients are established, this specific combination of them in this specific supplement is still a fairly new product, so give it time.
Worth nothing: the scam-spotting website Fakespot.com gives Propidren an A, which is encouraging indeed.
One goal of this blog is to keep my readers current on all the up and coming treatments that help women with hair loss. After my research, I can say with confidence that Propidren fits the bill.
I recommend this supplement because of the abundance of positive reviews, and because the ingredients in this supplement are directly and scientifically linked to the causes of hair loss in women. It’s a good way to get all that stuff in one place.
At $39.99 for a monthly supply, it’s a wee bit on the pricey side, but as we’ve established for other hair loss treatments on this blog, this is about the average price range for hair loss treatments.
We can only hope that one day soon all this stuff will be covered under health insurance, because these are legit medical expenses!
Is this it, or do I need to do anything else besides Propidren?
I recommend combining this supplement with other hair loss treatments for maximum impact.
Other strongly recommended treatments to include alongside Propidren are:
- Daily Bone Broth -OR- hyrdolized collagen supplement
- Biotin supplement (depending on how much biotin-rich food you eat, I would still take a separate biotin supplement in addition to Propidren)
- Caffeine shampoo for thinning hair -OR-
- Rogaine for aggressively thinning or balding hair
Why all of this at once? Because hair loss is poorly understood and complex.
Most of us, especially women, have more than one cause at work. Usually, there is a nutritional factor, a hormonal factor, and some lifestyle factors like stress, all at the same time.
In my opinion and experience, it’s better to throw as much at the problem as possible. Our hair is precious and worth saving.
Any experiences with Propidren? Please feel free to share your thoughts, ideas, and questions. I look forward to your feedback!
