Plantur 39 Shampoo – Review For 2018

You may be looking for a hair loss solution online, and stumbled into Plantur 39 shampoo reviews.

Let’s look in depth at what Plantur 29 shampoo has to offer, and whether it’s a good treatment option for female hair loss.

Plantur 39 makes a wide range of hair loss products, including shampoo. The Plantur products are mostly marketed in Europe and the UK, but they are also available for purchase in the US.

Most of the Plantur products contain synthetic caffeine, and they are all targeted at women over 40. Why?

In their words:

Before the menopause, hair roots are protected by high levels of female hormones (estrogen). After the menopause, estrogen levels will decline and the impact of male hormones (testosterone) will increase.

The consequences: hair grows thinner and falls out prematurely, the scalp becomes more visible and the hairline recedes.

Nature’s phyto active ingredients help the scalp protect itself from the consequences of decline estrogen levels. The caffeine in this shampoo prevents premature exhaustion of hair growth caused by the impacts of testosterone.

When washing, the active caffeine ingredient penetrates all the way into the hair follicle, which can be detected after being left on for as little as 120 seconds.

A combination of natural wheat extracts and provitamin B5 condition, repair and protect coloured and stressed hair. The damaged hair structure is smoothed and the hair is provided with intensive shine.

Plantur 39 claims that its products keep hair from falling out, and provide support and protection for damaged and stressed hair.

What they mean here by “impact of male hormones” is DHT, the byproduct of testosterone which is responsible for much of hair loss in both men and women.

(To read more about DHT, check out my review of a DHT blocking supplement.)

coffee hair loss caffeine shampooWhy Caffeine?

The Platur 39 company says that caffeine, which is a primary active ingredient in these products, can reduce hair loss resulting from excess levels of DHT.

They base this claim on studies that show caffeine is retained in hair follicles up to 24 hours after using the shampoo. They stop short of actually suggesting that the shampoo can cause hair growth.

Caffeine does penetrate the skin easily and hair follicles do hold on to individual hairs, so these claims from the makers of Pantur 39 are straightforward, and accurately reflect the science.

Is Plantur 39 ok for younger women?

Yes. Platur 39 is safe for both men and younger women. As far as I can tell, the product is targeted to menopausal women for marketing purposes primarily.

Some women go through early menopause; some younger women struggle with hormonal imbalances at early ages.

The causes of hair loss resulting from excessive presence of DHT affect women of all ages.

Is Plantur 39 ok for men?

Dr. Wolff makes another popular shampoo line for men, Alpecin, but as far as I can tell, the active ingredients in these two shampoos are identical.

What’s difference between Alpecin and Plantur 39 is the smell (ie, Alpecin has a more “masculine” smell- it’s in total Axe body spray territory and unfortunately I learned that from personal experience), the marketing, the price, and the packaging.

But, to be clear, DHT is a leading cause of hair loss for men, and both Plantur 39 and Alpecin work to block it through the active ingredient caffeine.

How to use Plantur 39:

Plantur 39 recommends that you use their shampoo and conditioner often, but it’s not necessary to use every day.

You should leave both the shampoo and the conditioner on your scalp for at least 120 seconds or 2 minutes each, for maximum penetration of the follicles.

For the Plantur 39 tonic, the makers recommend using it daily, because the tonic stays effective only for a 24 hour period.

Does It Actually Work?

Judging by online reviews, it is the effect of Platur 39 on hair growth that interests users the most. So, it’s important to clarify that Plantur 39 isn’t a “hair growth” product, it’s a hair protection product.

Consumers looking mainly for hair growth products here would need to modify expectations, or pursue scientifically-proven hair growth products.

The Good

  • Many verified buyer reviews on Amazon.com observe that Platur 39 seems to reduce their hair loss.
  • Others claim that this product helps provide fine hair with stronger texture and more body.
  • Many reviewers say these Plantur 39 products smell really good.
  • A few reviewers even reported new hair growth while using the product, usually around the hairline.
  • And finally, some say a combination of these things: less hair loss, and improved hair texture and appearance, especially when the hair is styled.

The Bad

  • As with all hair loss products, not everything is going to work for everyone. There are some negative reviews of Plantur 39 products online.
  • Some people have claimed Plantur 39 products are expensive, and not worth the price. Others say that their hair loss continued during using these products.
  • Some simply say they saw no difference.
  • Others noted that their instructions arrived in German, when they were expecting them to arrive in English. For those buyers, it makes sense to visit the English version of the Plantur 39 website, which includes an extensive FAQ including instructions.
  • You don’t always know what you’re gonna get when you order stuff from the internet, which is why I recommend that buyers select vendors on large websites like Amazon.com that feature hundred or thousands of ratings.
  • The Verdict?…

Overall: Might Be Worth Trying.

There are enough enthused reviews from people who’ve tried Plantur 39 online for me to confidently give it a positive recommendation.

Because of the lengthy history of this product line primarily in Europe, it’s possible even more detailed reviews exist in other languages online, and simply don’t show up for me in my English language searches.

Plantur 39 products are relatively new to the US but have been established in the European market since 2005.

The company that sells Plantur 39, Dr. Wolff, is a massive German beauty conglomerate that has existed since 1905. Dr. Wolff reports sales of Plantur are strong and have seen continuous growth since it was introduced.

I appreciate that Plantur 39 has a strong track record and an international presence. However, the reviews for Plantur 39 are nowhere near as uniformly positive as reviews for other popular caffeine-containing shampoos, like Ultrax Hair Surge.

Here’s a major plus, though: the price for all three of Plantur 39 products – shampoo, conditioner, and tonic – is less expensive than most single bottles of hair loss shampoo, never mind the tonic and conditioner!

For a clinical-grade caffeine shampoo for treating hair loss that doesn’t break the bank, Plantur 39 is an attractive choice. Give it a shot and come and let us know how it works for you.

As always, please leave a comment and let us know about your experiences with these products, or any questions or ideas, related or unrelated. I look forward to your feedback!

  1. Hi,

I’m in the menopausal stage of life and have deifnitely experienced thinning of my hair. Oddly enough hair grows in the wrong darn place, but that’s another topic, lol. I really appreciate the review of Plantur 39 as I’ve looked in to many products and for the price you definitely want a quality product. I’m with you that I want more positive results before even considering it. Thanks so much for the info!

    • Hi Maria – thanks for the comment, I’m glad that this review helped you in searching for the right shampoo. Check out my recommendation for a good caffeine shampoo alternative!

  2. Thank You Penelope

I found your article very interesting with a lot of good information for your readers to absorb, great this product is on the market in the states many products I find online are not on the market in the states.

I like this product makes men and women’s products, many good products I find are only made for the ladies.

The only issue which would have me hesitate on this product is the cost, it is quite high for many people on average incomes to afford.

  3. Wow I had no idea that caffeine can prevent hair loss. I guess a byproduct of testosterone has a natural enemy. I have a friend who is a family history of early baldness. He still has all of his hair right now since he’s only in his twenties, but you never know 10 years from now. I am going to recommend this to him. You’ll probably get it for his mother too.

    • Isn’t it crazy? Yeah, DHT causes hair loss in BOTH men and women, which is alarming. But at least it’s preventable, along with other herbal DHT blockers. The key seems to be to start using this stuff before you lose all your hair.

  4. I’m in my 30s and I have a horrible hair loss issue. I have tried all kinds of treatments and supplements by now. At the moment my hair became literally see-through and I’m almost out of solutions. I’m glad I stumbled upon your review here, it kinda gave me hope that maybe there is a product that can help me. 🙂 I’ll keep digging further! Thanks!

    • I’m completely understand how stressful it is to go through treatments trying to find the right one. I do hope this shampoo or even Ultrax Caffeine shampoo will help you. It’s really satisfying when you start to see regrowth. Best wishes.

  5. I never knew caffeine helps women who are suffering through hair loss. My mom drinks caffeine like a fish (I guess thats why she has a full head of hair.) Jokes aside I will definitely share this site with my older aunties. Thanks for the information.

  6. Hello Penelope
You have chosen a product that most women need.. My friends always ask me about a name of a shampoo that prevent hair loss.. You have a written a great review that I will use it and recommend for all friends.
By the way, I like all your website because it include very beneficial articles about the care of hair..
    Wishing you all the best
    Rania

    • Hi Rania, thank you so much for the comment, I really appreciate your kind words and sending friends here!

  7. Hi!

Really interesting post. I enjoyed reading it and I think it is a good review! I like the way you structured it – made it easy to read and learn more about Plantur 39.

  8. My hair has been falling out dramatically over the last year I have been using pantene products, I thought I would try plantar39 and have noticed a big difference in my hair after only using twice I’m very impressed well worth the money hardly any loss when I brushed after shampooing

    • Hi Jackie – thanks so much for the feedback and telling us about your experience with Plantur 39. I’m glad it’s making a huge difference for you.

  9. Great review, thanks.. I am undergoing chemo and losing my hair. Hmm,, Do you think it work, lol. On a serious note I am going to share this with my mother in law she has started to get thinning hair. Thanks for the info..

    • Yeah, that’s a tough one – but after your chemo is through, you should consider using an accelerated treatment like a cold laser helmet…mice studies showed they grew hair faster after chemo using this therapy than nothing. You could always try a hair loss shampoo during the chemo but it will likely be limited because you know the cause (and it’s not excessive DHT).

  10. I’ve been using this product shampoo conditioner and tonic water and I have very fine hair due to hormone imbalance. I’ve used a week and there’s defo not as much hair coming out when I shower very impressed and will continue to use but yes a tad exspenisive but it does work

    • Thanks so much for the feedback, Coleen! Really happy to hear you’re seeing improvement from Plantur39 just after one week. Sounds like it was worth the money!

  11. I’m glad there is some help for this sensitive problem. It is definitely harder for women to deal with. One thing I want to offer is that high levels of chlorine in your water can also cause women to be acidic and lose their hair. A good water purifier can also help. Thanks for the information.

  12. wao! Finally i got what i was looking for. I am suffering from severe hair loss and i badly need it. Thanks for sharing such useful product along with detailed information. I am definitely gonna order it without wasting time. Well done!!

    • Thanks for reading, Sarah! I’m glad that you’ll be trying out Plantur 39, come back and let us know how it works for you 🙂

  13. Caffeine in a shampoo that is pretty awesome. I love the idea of this shampoo because of how it helps around the hairline. I am going to show this to my mom. I really love how much info you provide. Thanks!

    • Thanks for reading! I’m glad you learned something new and will pass on the info to someone who needs a hair loss intervention!

  14. What about making a hair mask with caffine and honey……yogurt. would thag help…..puting caffien straight onto the scalp. Would it help?

    • You can use coffee in a mask or a rinse, for sure. Caffeine shampoos are more convenient for people who don’t want to make these kind of products at home. Thanks for the great question!

  15. It’s interesting that caffeine actually increases hair growth. Without having any knowledge on this I wouldn’t have thought it would actually help your hair grow.

I do have a few questions for you, though.

I was interested in purchasing this product. I have read some of the reviews online about Plantur 39. However, there are certain supplements like Vitamin A and Zinc that if used in excess can actually cause hair loss.

Also, I just wanted to check with you and make sure that Amazon is the cheapest place to purchase this product. How long do you believe this product would last, though.

Really, looking forward to reading your response.

    • It’s true that excessive Vitamin A can cause hair loss! You’ve done your research. Luckily it’s rare for most people to have excessive Vitamin A, and it’s always something you can get checked by a physician with a nutritional panel if you think you might be at risk. Amazon.com is the cheapest RELIABLE place to get this product. People sometimes sell beauty products on other sites and auction sites, but you never know what you’re going to get, and at least this is being sold directly by the vendor through Amazon.

It depends on your hair length, but in my experience with medium length hair, the trio of this size should last about 3 months. Hope this helps you in your quest for the best hair loss shampoo!

  16. Plantur shampoo, the one I am currently using. Superb superb superb product. Very effective results and not expensive. It is very important to take care of our hair as hairs are the main part of our personality and using good products is always a must. You always share really nice reviews of best of the best products as always.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience using this product, it always helps to hear from fans and enthusiasts, for the rest of us trying to make a decision!

  17. Hi Penelope, great reviews and very nicely explained, all the features you have mentioned are great. After reading a lot of useful articles from your website about hair loss, I decided to use Plantur 39 shampoo, and believe me it is an amazing product and I am very very happy with it. Thank you so so much for this, my hair loss has stopped because of you and your useful articles. Keep up the good work Penelope and I wish you all the very best.

    • Thanks so much for sharing your experience with Plantur 39! I’m glad it worked for you and I’m so happy I was able to make a helpful recommendation 🙂

  18. Thanks for another great review. It’s really interesting that caffeine shows up in so many of these products. Does drinking caffeine have the same effect?

    • Unfortunately, drinking caffeine doesn’t have the same effect. It needs to have topical contact with your hair follicles…good thing it’s easy to add to shampoo!

  19. This is a superb product and I am currently using it, after giving birth to my son, I started having a drastic hair fall then along with good food and multivitamin, I tried this shampoo, what a superb and effective results, I was amazed. I would highly recommend it for everyone who is experiencing hair fall. Superb and effective.

  20. I have just started to use this after shampoo tonic. I stopped using HRT about 10 years ago and my scalp is now showing through. If it works for me, how long will it be before I can see an improvement?

    • Thanks for the great question, Sue. With time length and hair loss, realistically you need to give anything a few months. Our hair grows slow and also goes through cycles of shedding and regeneration. 90 days is a fair length of time to assess any product. If you want to be aggressive, I’d recommend you pair it with a hair loss supplement. I use Nutrafol and you can read more here (and see pictures) of how it’s working out for me.

  21. I like how this company seems to be more open about what their product can and can’t do. I’ve seen a lot of companies advertise their product as promoting hair growth, when it simply protects the hair instead. Props for being honest about this fact! Also, I like how you give a regional overview of where this product is being predominantly used and who the founder is. Great read!

  22. I never heard of this brand before. It’s really interesting to follow what people are saying about these products but I really like your review of this product and I appreciate the honesty. I have all the information I need on one page. The products are affordable and seem the perfect gift for my friend. She started suffering from hair loss but she has been dealing with hair breakage too (to the point that she cut her hair really short). Will these also help her with the breakage problem or does she need to use another product first?

    • It never ever hurts to double or triple up on the hair loss products! For breakage, my best experience has been with collagen supplements. I’ve written more about that here. Bone broth or hydrolized collagen or marine collagen should be daily part of any hair loss sufferer’s daily routine. thanks for the great feedback about my post!

  23. Hi there

I really think this product speaks for itself. I mean honestly. And because hair loss is such a common thing these days, this stuff should be heavily marketed more. Its a no brainer, and they would make there, money back in a heart beat. Thanks for the review.

  24. I didn’t know that caffeine (although synthetic right?) could have such positive effect as an ingredient for hair loss prevention, i think that’s awesome.
At first I wasn’t sure if it was a product i should consider as i also hear it was mainly directed to women going through menopause, but i’m glad you have pointed out that is safe for younger women with hormonal imbalances…should i still ask my doctor?
The price is quite good as well, i shall give it a go!
    Thanks for the Awesome review!

    • It’s always safest to check in with the doc, but I wouldn’t stress about it. Caffeine shampoos are safe and very very few have side effects – if you are a regular coffee drinker and know you can tolerate it, I wouldn’t worry one bit. thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts!

  25. I’m a 55 year old woman and tried Plantur 39 shampoo and conditioner. Unfortunately my scalp became very itchy later in the day and a red welt formed on my scalp. I stopped using product and problem disappeared.
