What is Peppermint Oil?
Peppermint is a common plant across Europe and North America and is a hybrid between water mint and spearmint.
While its oil has traditionally been used as a flavoring for food, as well to add a pleasant scent to cosmetics. It has another use that is quickly gaining popularity: hair treatments.
Benefits of Peppermint Oil for Hair
Recently, peppermint oil has gained popularity as a hair treatment to assist in hair growth. This applies to people that suffer from hair loss as well as those that simply want longer, thicker hair.
But how does this work?
For an essential oil, peppermint can do a lot to combat unwanted issues that decrease hair growth. Having fatty acids makes your scalp healthier and revitalized. With its unique effect on the scalp, it can clear away yeast colonies and inflammations; the two common issues that hinder hair growth.
While hair growth is the primary use for peppermint oil in hair treatments, it also comes with a few additional bonuses:
- Gets rid of lice
- Balances the pH level of your scalp
- Removes dandruff
- Kills germs
This is certainly a lot to claim.
But what does science have to say about the effects of peppermint oil on hair?
Research on Peppermint Oil and Hair Growth
With all of these claims about the miraculous effects of peppermint oil, it is no surprise that a study was conducted to investigate these claims. By testing out four different hair growth treatments on mice, the researchers determined which was the most effective.
Each mouse was given some form of hair growth treatment: jojoba oil, minoxidil, peppermint oil or saline. At the end of the study, hair growth was measured in each mouse to determine which treatment had been the most successful.
The mice that had been given peppermint oil showed not only the most overall hair growth, or fur growth in this case, but also the thickest fur, the largest amount of active follicles and the deepest follicles.
This means that peppermint oil did not simply encourage hair growth from the active follicles, but it rejuvenated follicles that had gone inactive in the mice. It also penetrated deep into the follicles to stimulate the most hair growth possible, and the deeper follicles indicate that the new hair was particularly strong.
Given these findings, it would seem that there is some merit to the claims of peppermint oil being a wonder treatment for hair growth.
How to Use Peppermint Oil for Hair
Because peppermint oil can be irritating to those with sensitive scalps, most treatments recommend diluting it first. This can be done with water, but for the best results, you will want to mix it with a carrier oil like jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, or almond.
Because it also has hair growing properties, we recommend mixing peppermint oil in a small bowl or jar with jojoba oil. Your ratio should be two drops of peppermint oil to four tablespoons of jojoba oil.
The final component to this treatment is hot water. Turn off the heat when your water begins to boil and place the container holding the mixture of oils into the water. This will warm up the oil for your hair. While you let that sit in the water for ten minutes, wet down your hair.
For the best results, part your hair down the center so that the oil can get directly to your scalp. Ensure that the mixture is not scalding hot. Comb the mixture through your hair, then wrap it in a towel for twenty minutes. Wash out the mix, and then you're done. You should notice a new, healthy shine to your hair. Repeat this process once a week for the fastest hair growth.
